Question 3

[1 mark] Technology-active
The question

Given $\boldsymbol{a}=\hat{j}+\hat{k}$ and $\boldsymbol{b}=2\hat{i}+\hat{k}$, determine $\boldsymbol{a}\times\boldsymbol{b}$.

Not quite. The second component is $a_3b_1-a_1b_3=1\times2-0\times1=2$, not $-2$. In 2024, 4.9% of Queensland students chose (A).

Not quite. Two components have the wrong sign. The second is $a_3b_1-a_1b_3=2$ and the third is $a_1b_2-a_2b_1=-2$. In 2024, 4.7% of Queensland students chose (B).

That’s it. Step through the hints below to see why. In 2024, 82.9% of Queensland students chose (C).

Not quite. The third component is $a_1b_2-a_2b_1=0\times0-1\times2=-2$, not 2. In 2024, 7.1% of Queensland students chose (D).

The cross product is perpendicular to both $\boldsymbol{a}$ and $\boldsymbol{b}$. Test each option with dot products.

Test option

Write both vectors as column vectors and use the cross product formula from the formula book.

$$\boldsymbol{a}\times\boldsymbol{b}=\begin{pmatrix}a_1\\a_2\\a_3\end{pmatrix}\times\begin{pmatrix}b_1\\b_2\\b_3\end{pmatrix}=\begin{pmatrix}a_2b_3-a_3b_2\\a_3b_1-a_1b_3\\a_1b_2-a_2b_1\end{pmatrix}$$

Here $\boldsymbol{a}=\hat{j}+\hat{k}$ has components $(0,\ 1,\ 1)$ and $\boldsymbol{b}=2\hat{i}+\hat{k}$ has components $(2,\ 0,\ 1)$. Watch the zeros. Substitute into each row of the formula.

$$\begin{pmatrix}0\\1\\1\end{pmatrix}\times\begin{pmatrix}2\\0\\1\end{pmatrix}=\begin{pmatrix}1\times1-1\times0\\1\times2-0\times1\\0\times0-1\times2\end{pmatrix}$$

Simplify each row, then check the answer is perpendicular to both vectors using the tester on the left. This is a technology-active paper, so you can also enter both vectors in your calculator and use its cross product function.

$$=\begin{pmatrix}1\\2\\-2\end{pmatrix}=\hat{i}+2\hat{j}-2\hat{k}$$

$$\begin{pmatrix}0\\1\\1\end{pmatrix}\times\begin{pmatrix}2\\0\\1\end{pmatrix}=\begin{pmatrix}1\times1-1\times0\\1\times2-0\times1\\0\times0-1\times2\end{pmatrix}$$

$$=\begin{pmatrix}1\\2\\-2\end{pmatrix}=\hat{i}+2\hat{j}-2\hat{k}$$

Your calculator’s cross product function gives the same result. Writing the formula with the substituted values still shows your method.

(C)

How Queensland students answered in 2024

(A)4.9%
(B)4.7%
(C), the answer82.9%
(D)7.1%

From the QCAA Specialist Mathematics subject report for 2024. The percentages can add to less than 100 because some students didn’t answer.

Only mark this done when you could do it without help. Reading the solution does not count.
